Holiday Reading...

Every now and then a novel comes along that is so good you want to buy multiple copes and thrust them on your friends. Such is the case with 'Leaving Atocha Station' the debut novel by Ben Lerner. It marks the arrival of a major new voice one that has seemingly arrived fully formed and frighteningly original.

Geoff Dyer writes a wonderfully prescient review in the Guardian HERE

Now go to your local bookshop and pick up a copy.

John's Top 5 Listens #1- August 2012

Well, it's a blog that quite heavily features music, so here is the inevitable top 5 list! Still...check out some of the sounds, you might dig 'em!
{ J.L }

1) Arab on Radar- My Mind is a Muffler [Yahweh or the Highway L.P]
Fantastic art-noise-rock from this group of oddballs from Rhode Island. Sitting somewhere between Devo and Contortions, they really never made a bad record and three of the original members are now playing in a lineup as Doomsday Student. Easily one of the best "post-grunge" groups.

2) Broadcast and the Focus Group- Familiar Shapes and Noises E.P [Ghost Box records 7"]
Ultimately more rewarding that the still rather great LP they made together, 'Inside Out' shows a more groove orientated side which the collaboration perhaps could have explored if Trish wasn't so cruelly taken from us. Very much looking forward to the O.S.T for the Berberian Sound Studio film...

The Broadcast Project #4- Sat 15th Sept- Broadcast 'Haha Sound' special...

Back for our fourth installment of the Broadcast Project, we present our namesake band Broadcast's 2003 masterpiece 'Haha Sound'.

The album, a much overlooked classic, incorporates elements of psychedelia, electronica and kraut rock long before such a resurgence of these sounds would become popular.

Critically acclaimed, and regarded as one of the finest albums of the 2000's in some circles, the record will sit perfectly amongst the lysergic, psychedelic sounds from the boxes of Masters John and Julian.

Home Studio...

Great article with Pete Townshend about his home studio, its progression and his value of his demos for Who songs. Also interesting opinions of the advent of technology in the modern home studio. A great read.

Poetry Cornered...

Filmed by Peter Whitehead as Wholly Communion, footage of the International Poetry Incarnation held at the Albert Hall on June 11th 1965. The Broadcast Project have recently had the pleasure of spending time with Michael Horovitz (who appears here at 5.41 mins) a truly inspirational figure who is still going strong, creating new poems and putting on events. You can see one of his recent poems entitled 'Bankbusted Nuclear Detergent Blues' on the inner sleeve of the last Paul Weller album 'Sonik Kicks'. JULIAN.

You can't have the Boogie without the Woogie...

Avant-garde is no good without popular and popular is rubbish without a bit of avant-garde. Two of them are dynamite together and we are always trying to aim for a combination of both. I don't know how pure avant-garde people do it, it must be a thankless task, pushing back the boundaries to the really weird and extreme yet the dichotomy of it is that they are usually amazing musicians.
Trish Keenan of Broadcast, 2005.

Stereophonic Sounds, Typophonic Sleeve....

What to say?! An album full of test tones for stereo playback systems! Exciting stuff! Ok... That may not sound exciting, but the sleeve is pretty hot stuff.

Released by Decca, possibly late in the late 1950s/early 1960s, it probably would have been a important tool for sound engineers during the period to check accurate playback for the then cutting edge and groundbreaking stereo playback systems.

The sleeve uses very economical and basic typographic elements to create what now looks a nice nod towards constructivist typographic experiments and modernism. No doubt the lack of fuss and flash is due to the fact that the album would have been a purely functional item; a tool rather than entertainment.

A mix of serif and sans serif fonts, solid black lines and a crude but appealing op-art esque design on the back form a bold if very simplistic design for an essentially unexciting record! I must say... I did buy this for the sleeve!

Berberian Sound Studio....

I must say this film does look rather exciting... the life of a sound designer on Italian horror films in the '70's. Quite a strange subject matter but it certainly makes for an interesting premise. Featuring a soundtrack by Broadcast, it looks/sounds like a match made in heaven given the bands influences throughout their career.
